Under the COVID-19 epidemic, individuals’ life patterns have been changed. It also has severe impact on the global medical system. But it has presented an opportunity to reflect on our practice, education and research in nursing. Undoubtedly, the rapid sharing of information and experience through the Internet technology highlights the importance of us being part of the international community. The economic gloom, however, does not facilitate this. We must rationalize the use of our resources to produce quality outcomes. All these require our courage and wisdom. Our School would therefore make every attempt to work towards the following directions:

1. Internationalization: We endeavor to establish partnerships and networks with universities and hospitals at all levels. We commit ourselves to work collaboratively with our partners to further improve our teaching and research work.

2. Value-addedness: We are determined to improve our curricula, enhance the quality of teaching and learning and streamline our work to make our effort cost-effective. For research, we continue to focus our effort on the elderly care and the oncologic nursing.

3. Excellence: We commit ourselves to progress and measure our achievements against international benchmarks. We are determined to make the School of Nursing at Chang Gung University stand out among our international counterparts.

Mission for MSN Level
In accordance with our school's philosophy of “Working hard while keeping it simple” and our purpose of combining theory and practice by caring for all, in the spirit of Florence Nightingale, our aim is to cultivate nursing talents that encompass clinical practice, leadership and research capability within an international perspective. This will expand the nurses' role and function in a variety of health care systems while enhancing the quality and development of the nursing professional.

Objectives of Teaching for BSN level
 

1. To cultivate caring competences in delivering the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural aspects of humane and holistic nursing care.
   • To integrate the theoretical and practical aspects of nursing, cultivating and developing nursing knowledge and skills. To improve clinical decision-making, speculation and problem-solving and apply these skills to the nursing process.
     • To cultivate communication skills, accountability, and the ability to coordinate, cooperate, lead and manage, within a health care team.
       • To cultivate humanitarian and ethical values, promoting the appreciation of and identification with, the nursing profession.
         • To develop competence, by applying contemporary nursing theories, research methods and results, thus, improving the practice of nursing.
           • To provide a whole person teaching-learning environment, with international-academic exchanges, to extend students’ international perspectives.
             • To cultivate an attitude of independent, life-long learning and the ability to promote personal and professional growth.

 

Objectives of Teaching for MSN level

   • To perform advanced nursing care. To use critical thinking and innovative ability in clinical decision making process.
     • To equip competences on consultation, collaboration, leadership and management. To play an active role as an advocate to client.
       • To equip research ethic and promote the development in professional nursing.
         • To equip competences on critique as well as perform nursing research. To apply evidence based findings to improve clinical nursing.
           • To equip caring competences in diversity culture and have long vision with international perspectives.
             • To continue personal and professional growth in nursing.

 

1. Excellent learning environment:
   Our faculty comprises university graduates with excellent credentials holding masters or doctoral degrees from well-respected universities, both local and overseas. We offer a well-appointed learning environment, which includes a medical center, a community medical treatment center and a long-term care institution, all of which have been appraised as first class.

2. Whole-person care as the main educational philosophy:
   The whole-person care based educational philosophy is our core concept to develop all courses. Teachers build this teaching philosophy into their course goals and related curricular activities, and lead student nurses by personal example.

3. Diversified teaching methods:
   Our teaching methods are drawn from both Chinese and English  traditions. Approaches such as group discussions, role playing, teaching demonstrations, oral presentations, project design, and the use of multi-media and virtual patient ward models are utilized. Distance education is also offered as well as site visits and clinical practice.

4. Guidance and support systems:

   • 【undergraduate】There are abundant and diversified research resources available to facilitate interdisciplinary research and international cooperation. At present, our school has signed academic cooperation contracts with the School of Nursing at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Oregon Health Science University. Cooperative discussion is also presently on-going with the School of Nursing at the universities of Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Yale, George Town and the San Francisco Branch of the California.

5. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged to foster active development and cooperation between the school and international research institutions:There are abundant and diversified research resources available to facilitate interdisciplinary research and international cooperation. At present, our school has signed academic cooperation contracts with the Oregon Health Science University. Cooperative discussion is also presently on-going with the College of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh.

1.  We will continue hiring new faculty members with a Ph.D in nursing from domestic and/or overseas universities.  They are expected to contribute to both research and teaching in a variety of nursing-related topics.

2.  We will strive to create an international academic environment by recruiting prominent international scholars who have a stellar performance in nursing research.  These scholars will hold international seminars, which are expected to improve the English skills of our faculty and students. The academic exchange of students and faculty with internationally prestigious universities will be encouraged.

3. Faculty members and students are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary and international research collaboration, which will give us an opportunity to enhance our research quality.

4. International, interscholastic and interdisciplinary scholars will be recruited to establish interdisciplinary education and research centers, which mainly focus on geriatrics and cancer care. We will strive for improvement in the quality of clinical care and provide in-service education by developing local integrated care models.

5. Establishment of a nursing Ph.D. program, including the development of international degree and certification programs, with prominent overseas universities, is planned.
