Program introduction
The School of Nursing at Chang-Gung University offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Nursing. Each program is designed to prepare students to meet the academic and clinical demands of the Nursing field. The undergraduate program prepares students to be Registered Nurses who are proficient in general care and paves the road for graduate study in Nursing. The graduate programs in Nursing prepare students for advanced practice, leadership roles, research skills, and promote the development of expertise in selected areas of Nursing.
Baccalaureate Program (Bachelor of Science in Nursing: BSN)
The BSN program offers students dynamic courses to study that are both theoretical and practical. The program prepares graduates to work in a wide variety of clinical settings and provides the necessary foundation for master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing. Graduates of the BSN program will be prepared to take the national licensure examination for registered nurses. The BSN also offers a creative curriculum to prepare students to understand society’s current and future health needs. The curriculum reflects the current trends in health care, focusing on wellness/illness concepts and the delivery of care in both hospital and community-based settings. The BSN curriculum consists of two components:
- Required courses: Introduction of Nursing, Introduction of Traditional Chinese Medical Nursing, Anatomy (including laboratory), Human Development (including practice), Principle and Methods of Teaching, Parasitology, Physiology (including laboratory), Fundamental Nursing (including practice), Pharmacology (including laboratory), Pathophysiology, Microbiology and Immunology, Adult Nursing (including practice), Physical Assessment (including practice), Maternal-newborn Nursing (including practice), Pediatric Nursing (including practice), Biostatistics, Community Health Nursing (including practice), Psychiatric Nursing (including practice), Introduction of Nursing Research, Introduction to Nursing Administration (including practice), and Comprehensive Clinical Nursing Practice.
- Elective Courses: Organic Chemistry (Including General Chemistry), General Biology, Introduction of Public Health, Mental Hygiene, Counseling: Theories and Techniques, Nursing Skills in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Nutrition (including laboratory), Therapeutic Nutrition, Seminar in Women Health Issues, Nursing Ethics, Nursing Diagnosis, Health Education: Theory and Practice, Technology Application in Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Hospice Care, Independent Study (1), Trauma and Emergency Nursing, Long-Term Care, Special Topic Writing, Seminars on Nursing Profession Issues, Independent Study (2), Human Sexuality, and Health Promotion.
- Requirements: Completion of 128 credits is required to earn the degree.
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
The objective of the Master’s program is to prepare advanced practice nurses (APNs) with both qualitative and quantitative research academic ability, who can synthesize practice, research and theory to increase the quality of patient care. There are five tracks in the Master's program:
- Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialist (Medical-Surgical CNS)
- Focuses on both pathophysiological and psychological approaches to health problems experienced by adult individuals and their family members. Examples of these health problems/issues include cancer symptoms, quality of cancer care, palliative care, critical care, chronic disease care, etc.
- Offers elective courses, such as Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Quality of Life, Hospice Care, and Evidence-based Nursing, to help students understand the approaches of integrated nursing care, as well as to apply related therapies efficiently.
- Mental Health Nursing Specialist (Mental Health CNS)
- Focuses on mental health nursing issues experienced by client during each stage of life--- such as depression, quality of life, persistence, internal and external control, and body image, as well as various therapies such as family therapy, and group therapy.
- Offers selective courses: Human Sexuality, and Consulting Theory and Technique, to help students understand the human behavior and psychology, as well as to apply related therapies efficiently.
- Woman-Pediatric Health Nursing Specialist (Woman-Pediatric CNS)
Focuses on advanced family-centered nursing care and to apply related theories in caring for pregnant and postpartum women, newborn and premature baby, and children with acute and chronic illness.
- Gerontological and Community Health Nursing Specialist (ACN)
- Focuses on both gerontological nursing and community health nursing approaches to health problems experienced by elderly people, such as developmental characteristics, current issues of long-term care in Taiwan, discharge planning, case management, and health promotion.
- Offers elective courses, such as International Health Care System Comparison, Family Health Nursing, and Health Promotion, to help students participate in an intellectual discussion and academic communication, as well as extend and connect students’ learning experiences to real world.
Doctorate Program (Doctor of Philosophy: PhD)
The doctoral nursing program is currently under the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medical Sciences. This PhD program focuses on the integration of theory, research and practice with emphasis on multi-disciplinary collaboration. Students who graduate from this program are expected to be scholars with global vision. The curriculums include three major components: theories, research methods, and specialty areas. Students can choose one of the two specialty tracks, oncology and gerontology nursing, as their research focus. Courses in this program are taught by faculty members from both the School of Nursing and the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medical Sciences.

Graduation Requirements
- A minimal of 42 credits courses is required for graduation, including 18 credits essential courses, and 18 credits elective courses (including common elective 6 credits, professional elective 6 credits, foreign elective 6 credits). An extra 6 credits for Ph.D thesis is also essential.
- Length: Generally it takes 2-7 years to complete this doctoral program.
- Graduation requirement:
Publishing two SCI or SSCI papers, one accepted and one submitted.
*Only papers published within the period of Ph.D registration are eligible for graduation application.
